Reformer Pilates 

Reformer Pilates is a program comprising of finely tuned resistance exercises that allow you to work very precisely to develop good alignment, core stability, strength and flexibility. Unlike the Pilates mat classes and other reformer studio classes which are run in larger groups – our reformer pilates sessions are based on a 1 to 1 basis and small groups of up to 3 people.  This bespoke approach allows the Physiotherapist to ensure the program is specifically tailored to the clients individual requirements and ensure they work at a suitable level taking into account any injuries or problems.


Programs are individually tailored and are suitable for all levels from beginners to advanced and are also suitable as part of a rehabilitation program.   We will ensure your program is specifically tailored to a level that suits you best taking into account your goals and will be progressed as your body condition improves.


Our pilates max reformer exercise programs are led by Andrea Lucas who is a highly experience Chartered physiotherapist and Fully certified Reformer Pilates Instructor.  She has completed an extensive amount of training in Pilates and the Pilates reformer.

What is a Reformer? 

The Reformer is a bed-like frame with a flat platform on it, called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs. On the other end there are shoulder pads and it also has long straps with handles which can be pulled with legs or arms. Body weight and the resistance of the springs are what make the reformer pilates exercises more or less challenging.

Why do Reformer Pilates?

There are many reasons why you might want to do reformer Pilates, but some of the more common ones would be:

  • To complement your regular fitness program

  • To complement your Physiotherapy treatment

  • Goal specific exercise – to prepare for an event or challenge, or to work on a specific technique or muscle group

  • Early or late stage exercise rehabilitation

  • Strengthening work pre and/or post surgery

  • Prehabilitation – to avoid or prevent recurrence of an injury.

  • Managing a chronic injury or issue

  • Returning to exercise after a long break

  • Pre and/or Postnatal exercise (particularly if you’ve had pain or complications like split tummy muscles)

  • Or because you’ve been given some home exercises to do by your Physiotherapist and you’d prefer a more focused and supportive environment to do them in.

Ideally before you commence a course of reformer sessions you should attend for an individual assessment - this will allow a more individual and goal-aligned programme to be provided for you.


If you are attending there are two ways this can be done:


  1. An Initial Assessment with an introduction to the reformer

  2. A referral from your Personal Trainer or Physiotherapist, which will detail your needs and your goals and enable you to join the class straight away.

What will a reformer session be like?

It’s a very personal and bespoke session and each person’s programme may be different depending on individual requirements.  With a maximum of 3 people you can expect significantly more one-on-one attention and hands-on correction.The class is underpinned by Pilates-based thinking and approach – a focus on precision, specific muscle activation, and core control. It will incorporate the Pilates reformer along with other small equipment such as the Pilates Ball, spikey balls, Pilates ring/ circle and weighted balls. 


Your Physio may also use specific manual techniques (such as joint mobilisation, soft tissue release and taping) to enhance

your programme.

Results and benefits

To get the most out of your classes and to see the completion of your goals we suggest you attend these sessions regularly over a period of 5-10 weeks.  Ideally Pilates exercises whether on a reformer session, a Pilates class or a home program should be continued over a longer term to ensure maximum benefit. 

The results and benefits will depend on your reasons for attending, but you should expect them to include:

  • A highly specific exercise selection, enabling you to reach your goals faster.

  • A more individual programme and personal approach than is possible in a standard class

  • Chance to use specialist / new equipment.

  • A great way to complement and enhance the benefits of your existing classes and training.

  • A continually varied workout.
